Glossary

load type

The load type can be manual or powered, continuous, short-term or intermittent.

load direction

The load direction is either clockwise or anticlockwise, or both directions of operation are subjected to a load.

Bend radius

Smallest permissible bend radius of the shaft during operation. Unit: mm.

Breaking Strength

The tensile load under which the helix cable will fail. Unit: N.

Failure Moment

The load at which the shaft will break or undergo permanent deformation. Unit: Ncm or Nm.

Elongation

The amount of extension of the helix cable under a defined tensile load. Unit: mm.

torque

The torque, along with the speed, determines how much force is exerted and corresponds to the force in conjunction with a linear motion.

The values given in the tables relate to a static measurement with a test length of 305 mm and a straight installation configuration. Unit: Ncm or Nm.

direction of rotation

The direction in which points, when viewed from a specific position, move around an axis of rotation.

The direction of rotation of GEMO shafts is primarily determined by the outer shaft layer. When rotating, the outer layer must try to tighten. The standard direction of rotation for flexible shafts is to the right, as seen from the motor to the tool. Accordingly, the motor, looking at the end of the shaft, must rotate in an anti-clockwise direction.

Speed

Number of revolutions. In engineering it is usually indicated in the unit revolutions per minute (rpm).

Flock Yarn

Flock yarn consists of a carrier thread onto which flock fibres are applied. It is used with flexible shafts/helix cables to keep noise to a minimum. GEMO uses polyamide fibres.

maximum torque

The torque, along with the speed, determines how much force is exerted and corresponds to the force in conjunction with a linear motion. Maximum torque is the maximum torque that can be applied to the shaft before it undergoes deformation. Unit: Ncm or Nm.

pitch

The distance between windings of the helix wire. Unit: mm.

Yield Strength

The stress at which the helix cable begins to deform plastically. Unit: N.

Torsion

Twisting of a flexible shaft along its longitudinal axis under the action of a load. Unit of measurement: degrees.

Torsion Stiffness

Describes the twist experienced by a flexible shaft along its longitudinal axis. The various shaft designs exhibit differing torsional behaviour. Unit: degrees.

Helical Load

The helix wire displacement force in axial direction. Unit: N.

Helix Wire

Component of the helix cable, spring steel wire wound around a flexible shaft or a cable.

Integrity of the Helix

The helix wire displacement force in axial direction. Unit: N.

Tensile Load

The breaking force under which the helix cable will fail. Unit: N.

tensile Strength

The maximum tension that can be applied until failure during tensile testing. Unit: N.
