Flexible shafts

Metre for metre optimum motion transmission

Selecting and sizing GEMO shafts is easy in most cases. To identify the right product, however, various factors must be known and taken into consideration:

  • Direction of rotation Direction of rotation The direction of rotation of GEMO shafts is primarily determined by the outer shaft layer. When rotating the outer layer must try to tighten. There are shafts for one direction of rotation (type H) or both directions of rotation (types SL 8, SL 16 and NL)
  • Torque The torque, along with the speed, determines how much force is exerted and corresponds to the force in conjunction with a linear motion
  • Speed Revolutions per minute 
  • Bend radius Smallest permissible operating radius for the GEMO shaft. The speeds indicated apply to shafts operating in a relatively straight shape.
  • Failure moment  Load limit at which the shaft will break or suffer permanent deformation

If the flexible section exceeds 100 mm, the GEMO shaft should be placed in a casing, providing improved guidance, quieter operation and low twist. As a rule of thumb, the inner casing diameter should be 1/3 larger than the shaft diameter. 

There is a possibility to produce flexible shafts as metre goods unoiled, e.g. if plastic gating is planned, or to coat the shaft with a plastic coating.
